Welcome to the KRC Web Tool!

Powered by KRC version 2.3.2

There are 3 ways to run KRC on the web:

  • Simple mode: Enter basic information to see a graph of temperatures
  • One point mode: Enter all necessary inputs and run KRC in single point mode
  • File mode: Upload your own input file and run KRC in normal mode.
  • Note: Files saved using the "Options" tab will persist for approximately 30 days

Simple Mode:

Select an hour of day:
Name for this job (16 character limit):

Search for a feature (i.e. Gale Crater):

OR enter a lon/lat

Enter latitude:

Files:

Note: Input files should contain no path information when being sent to KRC. This specifically refers to master files specifying the name of output files (8 0 0 lines) and single point master files specifying the name of the single point line file.

No files have been uploaded or created for this session.

Simple Mode

Simple mode :

The KRC web simple mode runs KRC with input files based on which simple mode is requested: hourly or seasonal. In both cases KRC writes a type 52 binary file from which are extracted the requested data.

These extracted data are written to a plain-text table file that has no header, only lines of data. For the hourly mode, there is a line for every hour in the .t52 file; normally 48 lines, every 1/2 hour. For seasonal mode there is a line for every season in the .t52 file; normally 669 lines, every sol; these are uniformly spaced in time, not Ls.

Every line has 5 columns. From the left:
Col. 1 is a 0-based line index
Col. 2 is the abcissa (X-axis) value, which will be hour or Ls
Col. 3 is Surface kinetic temperature
Col. 4 is Planetary Bolometric Temperature. i.e., temperature of a black body that would emit the same radiation as the total upwelling IR radiation at the top of the atmosphere.
Col. 5 is the one-layer-atmosphere kinetic temperature

The pre-defined scenarios for KRC are:

  • View temperatures throughout the day for a season
  • View temperatures throughout the year for one hour of the day

Instructions:

  1. Click on the "Simple Mode" tab.
  2. Select one of the scenarios in the drop-down list.
  3. Enter a name in the "Name for this job:" input. This is the name you will use later to see the results.
  4. Search for a feature on Mars. Simple Mode needs a longitude and latitude in order to find the correct inputs for running KRC. The easiest way to do this is by using the feature search. In the "Search for a feature" input, start typing the name of a feature. For example "Gale Crater". Case does not matter for this search. As you type, you will see a list of features that match what you have typed. There are two ways to complete the search. First, select any item in the list by clicking on it or using the up/down arrows to highlight it. Second, finish typing the name and remove focus from the search input. You can remove focus by clicking or tabbing away from the search box. Once you have selected a feature, all available information will be populated for the selected location.
  5. The values for albedo, elevation, etc. are retrieved from data products for the selected location. Update these as you see fit for the KRC job you would like to run.
  6. Click "Submit"
  7. Watch the status indicator to the left of the "Submit" button. When the job is finished, go to the "Results" tab to view the results. See help for the "Results" tab for more help related to viewing results.

Single Mode

Single Point Mode allows you to enter the same inputs that KRC Single Point mode requires and run a single point mode KRC job. KRC defaults are set for all inputs by default.

Instructions for Single Point Mode

  1. Enter a name for the KRC job.
  2. Update any default values as desired.
  3. Click "Submit"
  4. Watch for status on the left side of the screen (under Azimuth).
  5. Click on the "Results" tab to view the results of the job.

File Mode

File mode is designed to allow you to run KRC in "power user" mode. Just like KRC command-line, this mode gives you the ability to define your input files and run them through KRC. In this mode, the output from KRC, along with your input files, will be available to view or download. You are also able to create directories to keep your jobs organized. Remember that if you want these files to be saved after you have left the site, you need to go to the options tab and save your files.

Instructions for creating a directory:

To create a directory, enter a name for the directory and click "Create Directory". After you have successfully created the directory, the "Into Directory" drop-down list will be automatically updated. This allows you to select the newly created directory when uploading a file.

Instructions for uploading a file:

  1. If the file should be created into a directory that does not exist, create the desired directory.
  2. Click "Choose File". A file selection dialog will display. Select the file you want to upload from your file system.
  3. Select the desired directory to put this file from the "Into Directory" drop-down list.
  4. Click "Upload".
  5. Verify that the file appears in the list of files under the header "Files:". If you do not see the file, click "Refresh File List" in order to refresh the list of files you have uploaded/created.

Results

The results tab lists the output files and results from running KRC. The files are listed by name, status and type. The type refers to the mode (simple, single, file). To see the output and files associated with each job, click the "View Job Details" button for the desired KRC job. If you want to refresh the list, or get back to the list of KRC jobs, click the "Refresh/View Job Results" button.

Simple Mode

When viewing the results for simple mode, you will see the name and job type. You will also see the standard output, input file, and main input file. The standard output is the result from KRC. Simple mode is a KRC job run in one-point mode. Output from one point mode is a standard output file. You may click the "download" link next to the standard output file to download it to your computer. The graph that is displayed is built by parsing out the standard output file and graphing the results. The input and main input files are also able to be downloaded. These files represent the input sent to KRC.

Single and File Modes

When viewing the results for a single or file mode KRC job, you will see all of the files that were inputs or output from KRC. You are able to download any of these files by clicking the "download" link next to the desired file.

Options

The options tab allows you to save your files and results, or see previously saved files and results.

FAQ

Q: What is KRC?
A: Click Here to read all about KRC.

Q: Which mode should I use?
A: File mode and Single Point Mode are for more advanced users. If you are not sure that you want those modes, you probably do not. Simple mode allows you to select a feature on Mars and see temperature data for that location.

Q: Who do I contact if I have trouble with the website or KRC in general?
A: Send an email to help@mars.asu.edu

Q: I previously saved my results, but I do not see my results in the list on the options tab. Why not?
A: When you save a session, you will get a cookie on your browser that remembers the name you entered and keeps track of the set of files on our file system that are associated with your session. In order to see these files, you will need to be on the same computer and same browser that you used when you saved the session.
